Ryan Doesn't Know About 2016; Feinstein Believes in Assault Ban

Paul Ryan does not know if he's running for President in 2016, so stop asking. It's "premature," he said on NBC's Meet the Press. "I?ve got an important job to do," Ryan told David Gregory in his first Sunday show appearance since the election. "I represent Wisconsin, I?m chairman of the Budget Committee at a time of a fiscal crisis. I think I can do my job, representing the people I work for by focusing on that right now than focusing on these distant things." Ryan acknowledged that the Republican party is in the middle of a rebuilding period. "We have to expand our appeal to more people and show how we?ll take the country?s founding principles and apply them to the problems of the day to offer solutions to fix our problems," he said. "We have to show our ideas are better at fighting poverty. How our ideas are better at solving health care. How our ideas are better at solving the problems people are experiencing in their daily lives and that?s a challenge we have to rise to, and I think we?re up for it."

Ryan justified his silence between the end of the election and the?inauguration, about three months in real time but an eternity in Washington, by saying he was waiting to see how Obama behaved immediately after being re-elected. So far Ryan is unimpressed. ?He thinks Obama is more interested in "political conquest," than compromise. And, amazingly, Ryan longed for the days when staunch Republican Democrat Bill Clinton was in the White House. "If we had a Clinton presidency, if we had Erskin Bowles chief of staff of the White House, or president of the United States, I think we would?ve fixed this fiscal mess by now," Ryan said. "That?s not the kind of presidency we?re dealing with right now."

On gun rights, Ryan seemed open to reforms. He said the illegal purchase of firearms is "a question we need to look at." "We need to look into making sure there aren?t big loopholes where a person can illegally purchase a firearm," he said.

RELATED: Dianne Feinstein Wants to Ban Assault Weapons

Sen. Dianne Feinstein went on CBS' Face the Nation to talk about the "uphill climb" she's facing trying to pass an assault weapons ban. But she's not cynical about her chances, just realistic. "I think I can get it passed because the American people are very much for it," Feinstein said. When it comes to gun owners preaching about their rights to own guns, she only has one answer for them. "Does a child have a right to be safe in school?" she asked, referring to the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. "Does a law client when he goes into a law firm have a right to believe he's safe? Does a shopper in a mall have a right to believe that she's safe? I think so... You want to talk about rights, talk about the rights of the majority, too."

RELATED: Chris Christie Can't Wait to Tell You How Excited He Is for the Debates

Feinstein also gave Hillary Clinton an endorsement for a 2016 Presidential run during her appearance on CNN's State of the Union. "I think she's accomplished an incredible record and really has really unbridled popularity. She has a total knowledge of all of the issues. She has served in the senate. She has been first lady." But then host Candy Crowley cut her off. "You're a fan," Crowley said. "I'm a fan," Feinstein replied. "I would love it if she would run."

In other endorsement news, Newt Gingrich has taken a liking to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. He had only nice things to say about the outspoken and rumored 2016 Republican candidate on Face the Nation. He thinks the rest of the party need to start listening to the young buck. "Republicans ought to listen very carefully to Marco Rubio. You can?t lose Asians, Latinos, African Americans and young people and think you?re going to be competitive," Gringrich said. That's Gingrich's advice for the next step in the Republican rebuilding process. "You have to come to grips with reality. You have to learn to communicate with young people on their terms," he said. "But you also have to understand we need to be a country of immigrants where Republicans are seen as welcoming of hardworking, confident people."

Meanwhile, Sen.?John McCain started?preemptively making the argument for his new bipartisan immigration reform package that's going include a pathway to citizenship for immigrants during his appearance on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopolous. "Well, I?ll give you a little straight talk: Look at the last election," McCain said. "We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours for a variety of reasons, and we?ve got to understand that. And second of all, we can?t go on forever with 11 million people living in this country in the shadows in illegal status. We cannot forever have children who were born here, who were brought here by their parents when they were small children live in the shadows as well. I think the time is right." Sen. Bob Menendez, also on the program, thinks there's a "a glimmer of bipartisanship out there," when it comes to comprehensive immigration reform.?

Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames.

Speaking of Sen. Bob Menendez, the Democrat from New Jersey ducked questions about his feelings regarding Cory Booker's potential Senate run. There were some feathers?rustled?when Booker started openly talking about running for?fellow Democrat ?and Senate veteran Frank Lautenberg's seat in 2014. Menendez previously said Booker was being disrespectful considering the 89-year-old Lautenberg has not said whether he would seek reelection, but this time Menendez was tight lipped. "That election is next year, and all of the back and forth now is something I?m not focused on," Menendez said. "That?s a question for Sen. Lautenberg and Mayor Booker,"

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin also spoke about the path to citizenship coming in the Senate's comprehensive immigration reform package on Fox News Sunday. "We are committed to a comprehensive approach to finally in this country have an immigration law that we can live with," Durbin said. Without going into specifics, Durbin said the package will put a "high priority on the unification of families," when it's unveiled.?

Chuck Hagel's quest for Defense Secretary confirmation got two votes of approval from former high-ranking security officials on Sunday.?Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal and former CIA Director Michael Hayden both backed the Republican's nomination. "He was a member -- and this is not a universal condition -- he was a member that you could talk to, have an honest dialogue not necessarily disagree, but on a personal base have a candid exchange of views," Hayden said on?State of the Union. "You could always speak with him. And frankly given my time in uniform, that's a tremendous attribute. So I actually think this will work out well." McChrystal was much more demure in his praise. "Of course he'll build relationships as he goes. He has already got a lot of credibility," McChrystal said. "I don't think it will be a problem.

Bulgarians seen challenging government in nuclear plant vote

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgarians are expected to vote in favor of building a new nuclear power plant in their first referendum in the post-communist era on Sunday, challenging the government's decision to abandon the multi-billion-dollar project.

The plebiscite will be seen as a test of public support for the policies of rightist Prime Minister Boiko Borisov ahead of a July election, even though high turnout requirements mean the result of the nuclear referendum is not likely to be binding.

Only 9.34 percent of the voters in the Balkan country had cast a ballot by 1 p.m. (6.00 a.m. ET), six hours before the polling stations were to close, official data showed. Analysts said the apparent voter apathy was mainly due to lack of expert information on the cost, benefits and need for a new plant.

Borisov, already struggling to revive a lackluster economy, canceled the construction of the 2,000-megawatt plant at Belene in March, saying the Balkan country could not afford to foot the bill, estimated at more than 10 billion euros ($13.5 billion).

Bulgaria's allies in Brussels and Washington also opposed the project, fearing it would deepen the country's economic and political dependence on Russia. Moscow offered to finance the plant, which would have been built by its Atomstroyexport.

But opinion polls suggested two thirds of people who said they intended to vote would choose to press on with the plant, many of them hoping it would rein in electricity prices, create jobs and help make Bulgaria an energy hub for southeast Europe.

"Bulgaria needs a new nuclear power plant. I do not want my kids to pay high electricity bills and that's what will happen if we give up the construction of the Belene plant," engineer Georgi Avramov, 49, told Reuters ahead of the vote.

FRUSTRATED VOTERS

While the economy has emerged from a deep recession, it is growing only slowly and many voters are frustrated Bulgaria still trails other ex-communist members of the European Union, with wealth per capita less than half the bloc's average.

Analysts said a strong vote in favor of Belene would be an embarrassment for Borisov, a former bodyguard who has made little progress in his promises to root out corruption since he came to power in 2009.

Unpopular austerity measures imposed by Borisov's ruling center-right GERB party have already narrowed its lead over opposition Socialists - who called for the referendum - ahead of parliamentary elections in July.

"If we get a strong 'pro-Belene' vote as expected, even though the results are likely to be invalid, we would already have a serious political issue on which Borisov will have to act very carefully," said Gallup International political analyst Kantcho Stoichev.

The result of the referendum, which asked whether new nuclear power plant should be built and not about the use of nuclear power in general, will only be valid if 4.35 million out of the 6.9 million eligible voters take part - a figure analysts say will be almost impossible to reach.

If 20 percent of voters participate and half of them vote in favor of Belene, the issue will go to parliament for a final decision.

Bulgaria has an operational 2,000 megawatt nuclear power plant at Kozloduy and has hired U.S. firm Westinghouse to draw up plans to add another 1,000 MW unit at the site.

The new plant at Belene, on the River Danube, was also opposed by environmentalists, who said it would be built near an earthquake-prone area, and by rights groups who said the high-cost project would encourage corruption in the EU's poorest member state. ($1 = 0.7421 euros)

Power helps you live the good life by bringing you closer to your true self

Jan. 28, 2013 ? How does being in a position of power at work, with friends, or in a romantic relationship influence well-being? While we might like to believe the stereotype that power leads to unhappiness or loneliness, new research indicates that this stereotype is largely untrue: Being in a position of power may actually make people happier.

Drawing on personality and power research, Yona Kifer of Tel Aviv University in Israel and colleagues hypothesized that holding a position of authority might enhance subjective well-being through an increased feeling of authenticity. The researchers predicted that because the powerful are able to "navigate their lives in congruence with their internal desires and inclinations," they feel as if they are acting more authentically -- more "themselves" -- and thus are more content.

Their findings are published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

In their first experiment, the researchers surveyed over 350 participants to determine if internal feelings of power are associated with subjective well-being in different contexts: at work, with friends, or in romantic relationships.

The results indicated that people who feel powerful in any context tend to be more content.

The most powerful people surveyed felt 16% more satisfied with their lives than the least powerful people. This effect was most pronounced in the workplace: Powerful employees were 26% more satisfied with their jobs than their powerless colleagues. The power-based discrepancy in happiness was smaller for friendships and romantic relationships. The researchers posit that this may be because friendships are associated with a sense of community rather than hierarchy, and therefore having power in this kind of relationship is less important.

In the second and third experiments, Kifer and colleagues examined the causal relationship between power, feelings of authenticity, and general well-being, by manipulating each of the factors independently. The results revealed that being in a position of power causes people to feel more authentic and "true to themselves" -- that is, it allows their actions to more closely reflect their beliefs and desires. Feelings of authenticity, in turn, enhance subjective feelings of well-being and happiness.

"By leading people to be true to their desires and inclinations -- to be authentic -- power leads individuals to experience greater happiness," the researchers conclude.

Kifer and colleagues propose that future research into power dynamics, happiness, and authenticity should focus on specific kinds of power, both positive (such as charisma) and negative (such as punishment).

Together, these findings suggest that even the perception of having power can lead people to live more authentic lives, thereby increasing their happiness and well-being.

Ad Execs Take Revenge On 'Creative Confessional' - Business Insider

A blog called "The Creative Confessional" started life as a place where art directors and copywriters at ad agencies could go to anonymously confess their weird quirks and dislikes about the job. A typical confession would be, "For fun, I convinced an AE to only use Bing."

Amusing, but harmless.

Until recently.

The confessions have taken a dark turn in the last few days, with execs posting material on the blog that identifies specific workplaces and even individuals.

For example, this confession is, obviously, all about TBWA/Chiat/Day, the ad agency for Apple:

It's not too mean. But then there's this ...

BHP Billiton is the world's largest mining company. It has used Lawrence Creative as its agency. I'm not saying that a Lawrence exec wrote that confession. But a person could be forgiven for thinking that, based on the confession's words. Which is why the blog is so (unintentionally) vicious.

Here's another example:

Copyright and trademark law in the fashion business is nebulous at best. It's difficult to own a look or a color. But companies can use expensive litigation as a weapon. If this person is employed at a small company, Lululemon could put them out of business.

It gets personal, too. Presumably there are three women out there who know exactly what this was all about:

This one is kinda funny ...

... but creating fake likes is not only against Facebook's rules, it's a legal issue too. Reverb PR was once cited by the FTC for writing fake product reviews for its clients.

Likewise, this move is professional suicide:

Pepsi is the blue brand, in case you live under a rock. Clients have fired agencies from their accounts for screwing up this kind of thing.

Then there are the petty acts of revenge by underlings:

And power-plays by egomaniacs:

The blog also covers the unpleasant side of agency life that could occur at any office:

Although this woman has issues only she can solve:
