Glossary of ingredients for natural cleaners.

Glossary:

Borax: Naturally occurring crystallized form of boric acid, used as a flame retardant and in detergents. Sold with cleaning supplies in department and grocery stores.

Carrier oils: Food-grade oils, such as almond, grapeseed, sunflower and olive oils, used to carry diluted essential oils in beauty supplies. Sold with baking supplies in grocery stores.

Castile soap: A liquid or solid soap with a base of olive, coconut, hemp or other oils. (Dr. Bronner?s is a popular brand.) Sold with beauty supplies in department stores like Target, and online.

Coconut oil: Valued for hair and skin care and in cooking. Sold with baking supplies in grocery stores, and online.

Epsom salts: A naturally occurring crystallized form of magnesium, valued as a bath salt. Coarse sea salt can be substituted. Sold with health and beauty supplies in drugstores and department stores.

Essential oils: Distilled or extracted plant oils with potent aromas. Sometimes pricey, but a small bottle lasts a long time. Sold in natural foods stores, and online at sites such as etsy.com and amazon.com.

Glycerin: A component of many soaps, especially clear ones, that attracts moisture and is used as a skin softener. Sold with cake decorating supplies at craft and grocery stores.

Lemon juice: Squeezed fresh or from a bottle.

?Washing soda (soda ash): Often used as a water softener and cleaning booster, it?s extracted from the ash of plants or produced with table salt and limestone. Sold with cleaning supplies in grocery stores.
