At C-A-L Ranch Stores, it?s all Western all the time.
Cowboy boots, Wranglers, plaid button-down shirts and ball caps line the men?s clothing area. A Lil? Roper Ropin? Kit, Junior Steer Head and plush trophy heads make for a unique toy section, while the feed section stocks food for dogs, horses and wild birds.
Need a heated pet bed? No problem. What about a semi-automatic pistol? They?ve got that, too.
Once the new C-A-L Ranch opens in Las Vegas, those with a taste for the cowboy and cowgirl lifestyle will have one-stop shopping. And you only have to wait until the end of February.
Founded in 1959 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, C-A-L Ranch Stores target shoppers who live the farm, ranch and Western lifestyle. The company?s product mix includes ranch and farm supplies, livestock, equine, pet feed and accessories, work and Western apparel and footwear, shop equipment, tools, hardware, lawn and garden supplies, and outdoor sporting goods.
In addition to the new Las Vegas store at 232 N. Jones Blvd., the company is opening a location in Show Low, Ariz., around May. In Nevada, it already has stores in Carson City and Elko.
The move south is a big expansion for the company founded by Clinton, Allen and L. Wayne Murphy. The chain will soon have 21 stores across Nevada, Utah, Arizona and Idaho. In the past 15 months, C-A-L Ranch Stores has opened four new locations, due in part to the company?s double-digit sales increases among comparable stores the past few years.
Privately held, the company expects to employ about 35 people at its Las Vegas location just off U.S. 95 at Jones. The 60,000-square-foot store will be in a sparsely populated strip mall, where CVS is the only other major tenant. Bill Bunker, the company?s vice president of store operations, said a second Las Vegas store is planned.
?There are a number of places in Las Vegas you can buy most of the things we sell, but there?s no store where you can buy all of the things we sell,? said Bunker. ?We?re going to fill a niche in the market no one else has right now.?
The only concession to urban Las Vegas will be a little more merchandise in the Western gift lines.
Las Vegas already has stores that sell feed, some that sell Western wear, firearms and hardware, but not necessarily all together, which Bunker said is what will set C-A-L Ranch Stores apart and make them successful in the valley.
When thinking of local shops that at least partially cater to a Western lifestyle, V&V Tack and Feed, 8043 N. Durango Drive; Nellis Farm & Feed, 3084 N. Nellis Blvd.; and Jones Feed and Tack at 6515 W. Lone Mountain Road come to mind.
Toni, owner of Jones Feed and Tack, said she?s not sure if the new C-A-L Ranch will have any effect on her business, which is roughly seven miles from the new store. ?That?s a wait and see. You just don?t know,? she said. ?Everybody?s got to make a living.?
At Jones Feed and Tack, which focuses heavily on feed, sales have dropped the past few years. Toni said it?s because as more and more single-family homes were built in the northwest, many of her horse-owning customers moved to Pahrump or Logandale. And many others had to sell their horses once the recession hit.
?We still move hay, straw and horse feed, but nothing like we used to,? Toni said. ?It?s not a pleasant place to be right now.?
