A Defining Moment: Issue 5
Wisdom of The Crowds
How many spa and/or wellness associations do you think there are around the world?
I will give you the answer in a moment?but first, I want to introduce you to a great resource on the Global Spa and Wellness Summit (GSWS) website where you can find a pretty good list of associations for starters. You can find it under the ?Spa Resources? tab and the subheading ?Associations.?
The GSWS motto is ?Joining Together. Shaping the Future.? The associations, alliances, forums, networks and such listed here are in effect doing exactly that ? they aggregate spas geographically or according to a special interest. And the GSWS site then aggregates those websites ? think of it as a hub.
Here are some examples:
By Specialty or Special Interests:
United Kingdom: Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT)
United States: Green Spa Network (GSN)
Thailand: Thai Lanna Spa Association (TLSPA)
By City:
United States: Las Vegas Spa Association (LVSPA)
Philippines: Spa and Wellness Association of Cebu (SWAC)
United States: New York Spa Alliance (NYSPA)
By Island:
Caribbean: Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA)
Spain: Gran Canaria, Spa, Wellness & Health Association (GCSWHA)
Thailand: Phuket Spa Association (PSA)
By State or Province:
Canada: Ontario?s Premier Spas
United States: California Spa Association (CSA)
United States: Arizona Spa & Wellness Association (AZSpaWell)
By Continent:
Africa: Spa Association of Africa (SAA)
Australia: Australasian Spa Association (ASPA)
Europe: European Spas Association (ESPA)
By Country:
India: Indian Spa and Wellness Association (ISWA)
Serbia: Serbian Spas Association
Slovenia: Slovenian Spa Association (SSNZ)
Worldwide:
Worldwide: International Health and Fitness Association (IDEA)
Worldwide: Int?l Society of Medical Hydrology & Climatology (ISMH)
Worldwide: Spa & Wellness International Council (SWC)
Our industry is still young, so there is likely room for many more city or regional associations as well as special interest group alliances. You might even be in a country that hasn?t aggregated its spas and wellness establishments yet. If you have ever thought about starting a group, be encouraged that this can be a help to the industry. While the GSWS doesn?t get involved in managing any of these groups, we are happy to aggregate them. Just let us know when you have a URL that you would like us to share and we will post it.
And there are many other ways we can all work together. Consider, for example, if the entire industry was to declare a global ?Spa or Wellness Day (or Week),? as suggested by several GSWS delegates over the years, including Belgin Aksoy from Turkey, and Stanley Stankov from Bulgaria. Or, what if the entire industry took a survey in the same week and the results were shared with everyone right away? If we all get connected, there are all kinds of things we could accomplish together, initiatives that none of us could accomplish individually. That is the spirit of the Summit ? and the spirit of the website.
So how many spa and/or wellness associations are there around the world? Well, the answer today is ?at least 130 and probably more.? Again, if there is an association you feel should be added to the GSWS association list, just leave a comment below. That?s an example of ?wisdom of the crowds.?
Happy weekend,
The GSWS Team
